How your score is worked out
Typing tests follow one convention: a word is five characters, spaces and punctuation included. That keeps "a" and "extraordinary" from skewing the result.
- Net WPM is correct characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes. This is the headline number and the one employers mean.
- Raw WPM counts every character you typed, errors included. The gap between raw and net shows how much mistakes cost you.
- Accuracy is the share of keystrokes that were right first time. Backspacing fixes the text but not the record.

Is this typing test really free with no signup?
Yes. Every test, the certificate and your history work without an account. Results are stored only in your own browser (localStorage) and you can clear them at any time.
How is WPM calculated?
A "word" is counted as 5 characters, including spaces and punctuation. Net WPM is correctly typed characters divided by 5, divided by the minutes elapsed. Raw WPM counts every character you typed, right or wrong.
How is accuracy calculated?
Accuracy is the share of your keystrokes that matched the expected character at the moment you typed them. Fixing a mistake with Backspace does not erase it from accuracy, which mirrors how most employment tests score.
What is a good typing speed?
Around 40 WPM is a typical adult average. 50 to 60 WPM is comfortably above average and meets most office job requirements, and 70 WPM or more is fast. See our guide to what counts as a good WPM for detail by job.
Is 40 WPM good?
Yes. 40 WPM is about the everyday adult average and is enough for most general office work. In the largest typing study the average volunteer typed 51.6 WPM, so 40 WPM sits a little below that group.
Is 20 or 30 WPM good?
20 to 30 WPM is below average and typical of people who still look at the keys. It is fine for light use, and learning to touch type usually lifts it past 40 WPM with a few weeks of short daily practice.
What is a good score on a 1 minute typing test?
For most people 50 to 70 WPM with at least 95% accuracy is a good one-minute score. One-minute results run a little higher than 5-minute results because there is no time for fatigue.
Does this test work on a phone?
Yes, it works with an on-screen keyboard, though phone scores are usually lower than on a physical keyboard. For a score to put on a CV, test on the keyboard you will use at work.
