What data entry tests really check

A data entry test is less about fast prose and more about precision with mixed characters: capitals, hyphens, full stops, slashes and digits all in one line. One wrong digit in an invoice amount is a real cost, so employers usually care more about accuracy than raw speed. Many ask for 97 percent or higher.

Each record looks like this

INV-48213 Harbour, K. 312.50 04/17/26 30512: a reference code, a surname and initial, an amount, a date and a ZIP code. They are randomly generated, so you cannot memorise them.

Tips: read a whole field before typing it, keep a steady rhythm rather than bursting, and use the numpad for amounts if you have one. The 10 key test trains that separately.

Frequently asked questions

What KPH do data entry jobs require?

Many entry-level postings ask for around 8,000 to 10,000 keystrokes per hour with high accuracy. Specialised roles can ask for more. Always check the specific job listing.

Is WPM or KPH used for data entry?

Both appear. KPH is more common for numeric and mixed data, WPM for text-heavy roles. This test shows both.
