One word per minute equals 300 keystrokes per hour. Convert in either direction below, or work out KPH from a count.
KPH from a count
= 9,000 KPH (30.0 WPM equivalent)
WPM to KPH table
| WPM | Keystrokes per minute | Keystrokes per hour |
|---|---|---|
| 20 | 100 | 6,000 |
| 30 | 150 | 9,000 |
| 40 | 200 | 12,000 |
| 50 | 250 | 15,000 |
| 60 | 300 | 18,000 |
| 70 | 350 | 21,000 |
| 80 | 400 | 24,000 |
| 100 | 500 | 30,000 |
The formula
KPH = WPM × 5 × 60. A standard word is 5 keystrokes, and there are 60 minutes in an hour. In the other direction, WPM = KPH ÷ 300.
Strictly, some employers count every key press including Backspace, while others count only correct keystrokes. Our 10 key test and data entry test report correct keystrokes, the stricter figure. For word-based maths, use the WPM calculator.
Frequently asked questions
What is keystrokes per hour (KPH)?
KPH is the number of keys you press in an hour at your typing pace. It is the usual speed measure for data entry and 10 key jobs because it counts digits and symbols, not words.
How many keystrokes per hour is 40 WPM?
40 WPM equals 12,000 keystrokes per hour: 40 × 5 characters × 60 minutes.
What is a good KPH for data entry?
Around 8,000 to 10,000 KPH is a common entry-level requirement, with 10,000 to 12,000 considered good and experienced operators often above that. Accuracy targets of 95 percent or more are usual.
