Why paragraphs give a more honest score

Random-word tests use lowercase words and no punctuation, so they flatter your speed. Real writing has capital letters that need the Shift key, commas, full stops and the odd number. A paragraph test measures the typing you actually do in emails and essays, which is why most employment tests use one.

Expect your paragraph score to be roughly 5 to 15 percent lower than your random-word score. That gap is normal. If it is much bigger, practise Shift and punctuation with the punctuation drill.

The paragraphs

There are 50 short paragraphs on five topics: nature, the kitchen, science, travel and sport. Each is 43 to 50 words of plain, neutral prose written for this site, so nothing is copyrighted and nothing is memorised from elsewhere. Choose one from the list, or leave it on random for a fresh one each time.

Frequently asked questions

How long is each paragraph?

Between 43 and 50 words, about 250 to 300 characters. At 40 WPM that takes a little over a minute.

Is the test timed?

By default the clock simply measures how long you take to finish the paragraph. You can switch to a fixed 1 or 3 minute test, and new paragraphs are added as you go.

Do capital letters and punctuation count?

Yes. Every character must match, including capitals, commas and full stops. Each one counts toward your character total, and each miss counts as an error.
